Economic History of Sevastopol city: Periodization and Historiographical Review

 

Abstract

Introduction. Sevastopol city has always been at the center of historical events. Therefore, in the process of city’s economy development the turning points should be identified as they change the trajectory of economic development. As a result, the economic development of the city includes both periods of accelerated economic growth and periods of catastrophic declines in economic activity and subsequent stagnation. Studying the turning points and identifying the stages of the economic history of Sevastopol city helps to understand better the historical and economic processes: their dynamics, causes and consequences. The purpose of the article is to propose an author’s periodization of the economic history of Sevastopol city based on the conception of turning points and to conduct a historiographical review of the proposed stages.

Materials and Methods. Methodologically, the preparation of the article is based on the general scientific principles of consistency, historicism and objectivity. The results of the analysis of the factual material allowed us to consider the key events and phenomena that have influenced the development of the economy of Sevastopol city from the end of the XVIII century to the present, in interrelation, consistently and taking into account the most significant factors of specific historical conditions. The use of the principle of objectivity involves an interdisciplinary approach based on the integrated application of specific methods of cognition of historical and economic sciences.

Results. The article presents the author’s periodization and historiographical overview of the economic history of Sevastopol city, based on the identification of turning points in the city’s history. The economic history of Sevastopol city was divided into 4 stages: imperial, soviet, ukrainian and modern. The criterion for determining the stages was the change of the economic system or models of economic systems. Within each stage, key events that determined new trends in the economic life of Sevastopol city were identified. Thus, the imperial and Soviet stages were further divided into the pre-war and post-war periods, which are characterized by fundamental changes in the dynamics of the economic life of the city. The article also conducted a historiographical review of each stage of the political and economic development of the city. As a result, the conclusion was made, that the scientific literature provides insufficient coverage of the economic history of Sevastopol.

Discussion and Conclusion. This article contains the results of a study of Sevastopol’s economic history from its foundation to the present, in which the authors analyzed the turning points and key features of the economic life of the city at different stages of its development. The proposed periodization of the economic development of Sevastopol city creates the prerequisites for further in-depth study of the patterns of economic life at certain stages of the economic development of Sevastopol city.
