To the Question of Socio-Economic Views of V. I. Semevsky: History and Modernity
Abstract
Introduction. 2026 marks the 110th anniversary of the passing of the eminent Russian historian V. I. Semevsky. His views, specific assessments, and conclusions extended far beyond the scope of historical scholarship and directly affected the social, political, and economic aspects of Russian society. However, they remain relatively understudied. The aim of this study is a comparative analysis and assessment of V. I. Semevsky’s socio-economic views and their relevance in contemporary conditions.
Materials and Methods. The research is based on general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, analogy, abstraction) and specialized methods (historical-genetic, historical-comparative, retrospective, and systemic). The object of the study is the scientific works of V. I. Semevsky. The subject of the study is the scholar’s socioeconomic views and the significance of their humanistic nature in modern conditions.
Discussion and Conclusion. By comparing V. I. Semevsky’s socio-economic ideas with the views of his predecessors and contemporaries, as well as assessments available in modern historiography, this article reveals V. I. Semevsky’s approach to the formulation and resolution of the “peasant question”, the analysis of the “labor question”, the reorganization of state socio-economic policy in the 19th century, and a critical approach to certain propositions of representatives of the liberal and conservative schools of thought in the area of class policy.
Keywords: domestic life, humanism, decembrists, “peasant question”, Petrashevsky circle, “labor question”, comparative method.
