Political and Economic Ideas of N. S. Mordvinov (to the 270th Anniversary of his Birthday)

 

Abstract

Introduction. 2024 marks the 270th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Russian statesman and socio-political figure N. S. Mordvinov. His views and specific projects still arouse keen interest, but are relatively poorly studied. The purpose of the study is a comparative analysis and assessment of the political and economic views of N. S. Mordvinov and their relevance in the context of the need to maintain the sustainable nature of the progressive development of the national economy.

Materials and Methods. The study used historical-retrospective, historical-genetic and hermeneutic, program-target and structural-functional methods for studying problematic issues in the history of economic science. The study is based on the writings of N. S. Mordvinov himself, as well as on studies by various authors published at different times and covering specific aspects of the political and economic views of the thinker.

Results. An analysis and assessment of the political and economic ideas of N. S. Mordvinov on the agrarian issue, in the field of development of credit and financial relations, protectionist and industrial policies is given. The differences between the economic views of N. S. Mordvinov and the ideas of physiocratism, mercantilism, Smithianism, and the content of his projects to reform the banking and financial system of Russia are revealed. The assessments of N. S. Mordvinov’s ideas in foreign and Russian historical and economic science are characterized.

Discussion and Conclusion. Shown are different assessments of the political and economic views of N. S. Mordvinov in foreign (J. Zweinert), domestic pre-revolutionary (N. N. Zakolpsky, V. S. Ikonnikov, N. L. Mordvinova, etc.), Soviet (E. Ya. Bregel, I. Blyumin, etc.) and modern (A. A. Anikeeva, S. N. Chagin, V. A. Lushnikova, etc.) historical and economic science. The protectionist basis of N. S. Mordvinov’s approaches to the economic policy of the state and the critical attitude towards certain provisions of the liberal economic doctrine (free trade, etc.) are revealed.
