The article is devoted to the problem of providing the objects and artifacts of the industrial age with a new value; modern functional use of former industrial sites and preservation of samples of industrial products which is considered to be important in the period of transition to global postindustrial development. The author analyzes the experience of revalorization of industrial heritage in the Urals and Siberia, in coal mining areas in the UK, in the mining region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais in northern France and the municipality of São João da Madeira in Portugal and substantiates the importance of taking into account the world experience in the development of strategies for the future development of the old industrial regions of Russia. The main directions and different formats of valorization of industrial heritage in Russia and abroad are regarded. The author gives the examples of museification («Severskaya blast furnace», Museum of military equipment «Battle Glory of the Urals»; Novosibirsk Museum of railway equipment named after N. A. Akulinin; OAO «Tomsk beer» Museum, the Lewarde Mining History Center, the Louvre in Lens), and cites the other methods of use of former industrial sites. The researcher raised the question about the main actors of the revaluation and its difficulties in Russia, the answer to which the author proposes to seek in the features of the cultural and historical development of the countries of the «second tier of modernization», underdeveloped civil society and the special role of the state.
