Employment and Activities of Evacuated Citizens in the Territory of the Mordovian ASSR at the Initial Stage of the Great Patriotic War

Abstract

Introduction. Based on archival data and published sources on the topic, an analysis was given of the processes of local placement and employment of evacuated citizens to the territory of Ardatovskii and Atyashevskii districts of the Republic of Mordovia.

Materials and Methods. The research used materials located in the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia, memoirs of eyewitnesses and contemporaries stored in the Museum of local lore of the Ardatovskij district of the republic. The authors use general scientific and special scientific (historical-systemic, etc.) methods.

Results. In the territory of the Mordovian ASSR, up to 67 % of the population was employed in agriculture (collective farms, state farms). A relatively small part of the displaced population worked according to their direct qualifications (party leaders, teachers, educators). In general, all the evacuated citizens faced wartime difficulties in the rear. The shortage of food and household equipment was present in the Ardatovskij and Atyashevskij districts, which, however, was solved at the national level.

Discussion and Conclusion. There were problems with the accommodation and employment of the evacuated population in both the Ardatovskij and Atyashevskii districts of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Concrete examples show the problems of hunger, poor financial security, lack of work in the specialty in most cases, etc.

Keywords. Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, evacuation, evacuation center, collective farm, life, agriculture, employment, population, the Great Patriotic War.
