The Material Situation of Peasants in the Alatyr District of the Simbirsk Province According to Economic Surveys at the end of 1916

Abstract

Introduction. The article examines the impact of mobilization on the material situation of peasant households based on the lists of “bread stores”.

Materials and Methods. The survey was conducted in December 1916 in 12 communities of 11 villages of the Alatyr district of the Simbirsk province. The analysis of statistical aggregates was based on the indicators of the presence/absence of horses and cows in 2 960 farms.

Results. The correlation of these indicators in groups of farms without men; farms left without men as a result of mobilization; farms with men who avoided mobilization was studied, and the impact of mobilization on the home economy was considered depending on the number of men called up to the troops from one household. The dynamics of the number of heads of livestock per household in 1911 and 1916 are analyzed.

Discussion and Conclusion. The stability of peasant farming during the war years was discovered. A strong lineal correlation was found for the mobilization factor in horses (0,698) and a weak one in cows (0,103).
