RUSSIA ON THE EVE OF THE GREAT REVOLUTION OF 1917: RECENT TRENDS IN HISTORIOGRAPHY

The First World War became the prologue of the Great Russian Revolution of 1917, radically changed the European state-political landscape as whole defined systemic changes in social, economic, political institutions and relations, and made significant changes in the intellectual and cultural spaces. In this context, the Great Russian Revolution of 1917 needs to be assessed as an epoch-making event that led to the socioeconomic and political transformation of Eurasia and a significant part of the rest of the world. Over the past two decades, dozens of publications on historical sources, hundreds of articles and monographs, historiographical studies devoted to this subject have been published. During the Soviet period, a peculiar alienation of the military history of Russia in 1914–1917 from «civil» was established in historiography – the course of combat operations was studied regardless of the events inside the country, and vice versa – the political, economic and social subjects rarely «invaded» the history of the war. The situation began to change recently, when, in connection with the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war, the first generalizing works appeared in which the economic situation of the country, social processes and the political crisis of the war years are considered in a single context.

Keywords: The first world war, 1917 revolution, Russia, Russian and foreign historiography.
